Barbados Carnival – Crop Over

The island of Barbados is host to one of the oldest carnival parties in the Caribbean, otherwise known as Crop Over. Although the official dates of the carnival are from the 18th of July to the 5th of August, celebrations start as early as in May and spread throughout the summer until Grand Kadooment day, when the main street carnivals and parades take place. Crop Over is a 300-year-old cultural celebration that marks the end of the sugar cane crops and honours the hard work. Since 1687, today continues to represent culture, heritage and all Bajan things.

What to Expect At crop Over Carnival Barbados

Expect loads of street parties, folk concerts, art exhibitions, food, music and crafts. Starting with the Opening Gala and the Last Canes ceremony, when the Queen and King of the Crop Over are chosen to represent hard work and labour during the season, the carnival culminates with the Big Crop Over Weekend leading to the main event of the celebrations: an extraordinary masquerade parade on the Grand Kadooment day.
